EPILOGUE

“I’M OFF!” ADELAID CALLED, quickly checking if Fuzz Lightyear and Spikesaurus Rex needed water, but both looked happy on the windowsill next to one another, arms reaching towards the watery sunlight shining through her new kitchen windows.

For they’d found they needed a place with lots of rooms for Adelaid to work in, and near enough to Big Think for an easy commute. A mini lair for Ted so that he could work from home when needs be, and a library filled with biographies of amazing women and Booker Prize winners and romance novels and dense scientific texts so they could snuggle up and read side by side. A nursery, for their daughter, Katie. That had been important too.

Adelaid licked icing sugar off her fingers and bounced out of the kitchen and down the hall towards the front door, slipping on her “new” second-hand brogues. Although she was making better money now, and she’d landed herself a billionaire, she still loved her vintage gear.

Only to find Ted already there, sunlight streaming through the beautiful, colourful leadlight front door, casting a golden glow over his beastly gorgeousness.

Ted turned, wearing her smudged and rarely used pink glasses, having not been able to locate his own. He held an insulated lunch box in his hand, Katie, their teething five-month-old, on his hip, gnawing on his shoulder and leaving pools of drool on the cotton of his button-down shirt.

“For me?” she asked.

Ted pretended she meant the drooly nibbler, but Adelaid ducked out of the way, before leaning in to kiss her arm cheek. Then snatched the lunch box instead. Adelaid opened it up to find a healthy salad, a banana and a blueberry muffin. Good man.

“Who are you meeting today?” Ted asked, hitching Katie higher on his hip. Then he checked his watch—his father’s watch, beautifully refurbished after its fall, its newish face already scratched from when Katie first learned to roll and Ted had reached out to catch her.

“Oh, only the star of the new Lois Lane movie.” Adelaid leaned in and rubbed noses with their daughter, before running a hand over her strawberry blond curls. “She’s just been diagnosed with Asperger’s, and I have the exclusive.”

“Smart girl.”

She glanced through the leadlight to find her driver had arrived. “How about you? What are your plans today?”

“Saving the world, cleaning rusk out of my hair.”

“So, the usual.”

“Yep. Sid is coming over to check on the solar panels and Mum will no doubt find an excuse to pop in. Might put on a movie with this one. Thinking five months is old enough now for her first showing of Calamity Jane.”

Adelaid mock gasped. “Don’t you dare! Not without me.”

“Fine.”

“Now, Muffin, you give Daddy hell, okay? It’s your right and your role as a daughter.” The Smudge nickname had gone by the wayside the moment they’d seen fingers and toes, all twenty of which Ted still considered a minor miracle.

For a man who’d seriously never considered fatherhood, he was a natural. Just as she’d expected. A beautiful calm balance for Adelaid’s wilder ups and downs.
